Lexington Public Schools is Hiring a Director of Elementary Education Near Lexington, MA

Position: Director of Elementary Education

FSLA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Superintendent of Schools

Terms of Employment: 12 month (260 days), 40 hours per week with benefits and salary in accordance an individual employment contract 

Primary Location: Central Office/District-wide

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience

Start Date: July 1, 2024

Role: Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent of Schools, the Director of Elementary Education (DSE) is responsible for all aspects of teaching and learning at the elementary levels, grades K-5, including coordinating the curriculum, instruction, and assessments for these grade spans. The role also collaborates with the Director of Secondary Education (DEE) to ensure continuity in grades PK-12; and with the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Staff Supports on related professional learning needs for educators and support staff in these grade spans.

The DEE coordinates the elementary instructional program (grades K - 5) in a manner consistent with district goals and objectives and develops and implements policies and procedures to meet curriculum, instruction, and assessment needs and as required by state and federal laws and local policy.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assists the Superintendent of Schools in the implementation and attainment of the district’s vision, as outlined in the Lexington Public Schools Strategic Plan. The vision, developed by the school community, prioritizes the following areas of focus: diversity, equity and inclusion; redefining success; students as active agents; authentic learning experiences; and community partnership; 
  2. Regularly communicates to the Superintendent progress and challenges at the elementary school level, working proactively to resolve issues and eliminate barriers to effective teaching and learning; 
  3. Serves as an educational leader and support to elementary school curriculum leaders and for all matters relating to teaching and learning at the elementary level;
  4. Serves as a liaison to schools, various departments, and district leadership, fostering an exchange of ideas and information and the development of successful plans focused on the continuous improvement of teaching and learning; 
  5. Facilitates, implements, and assists with the development of a standards-based curriculum in all content areas, grades K-5;
  6. Actively participates in hiring processes in the elementary schools designed to diversify LPS staff; 
  7. Develops, submits, and monitors budgets for the operation of assigned elementary programs and services;
  8. Supervises, directs, coordinates and/or assists with specially funded programs and grants; 
  9. Compiles data and other information for various local, state, and/or federal reports; 
  10. Provides high quality supervision and evaluation to assigned curriculum leaders and other Human Resources; 
  11. In conjunction with district staff, analyzes, interprets, and reports student performance data and makes recommendations for instructional improvement; 
  12. Works with elementary principals and/or department heads in the continuing evaluation of programs to improve student achievement; 
  13. Reviews, researches, prepares, and disseminates information pertaining to trends in curriculum development, extended learning programs, and intervention programs; 
  14. Creates, coordinates, and refines the program of ongoing evaluation of curriculum and instruction at the Elementary level; 
  15. In conjunction with district leaders, maintains appropriate records and statistics regarding trends, needs, and successes at the elementary school levels; 
  16. Coordinates with appropriate agencies, parents, and school Human Resources to resolve issues and secure appropriate resources and services; 
  17. Responds to community and school queries regarding elementary program offerings and operating procedures; 
  18. Whenever possible, attends elementary school building leadership team meetings and meets regularly with curriculum leaders and educators to proactively support their needs; 
  19. Performs any other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or the Superintendent’s designee.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Education or beyond and 3 - 5 years of experience in educational administration/central office or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively oversee teaching and learning at the Elementary level.
